What’s in a Name by Melissa Keir

What’s in a Name?

Many people ask me where I come up with the names I use in my books. Fortunately, I only have to look around me to find the perfect name!

Michelle Alt is the heroine in Claiming a Cowboy’s Heart. While she was also in two other of my cowboy books, we didn’t know more about her than her last name, which came from a teaching partner of mine. The year I wrote my first cowboy book, I taught kindergarten at a Michigan Charter School with a wonderful teacher across the hall. We each had our own rooms, but shared many a day planning and lessons. Our students became one big family as we often went to each other’s classrooms for activities.

Michelle’s first name came from my own sister. I needed a name for this wonderful character who was strong and opinionated… and my younger sister came to mind. She is all that I’m not.

Let’s not leave out the hero… Preston Hall. Doesn’t he sound like he’s from a wealthy family? The name Preston was the name of one of my students last year. He was always a quiet child but when he’d open up, he’d shine. Like Preston from my book, my student Preston had a dream. He wants to be a helicopter pilot. If you mention anything about helicopters, he will talk and share all his knowledge. I knew that my cowboy Preston had that same drive and determination.

His last name was a throwaway one…I needed a name to go with Preston and felt that another long last name would be too much. Besides Hall sounded more prestigious.

For the title of this story, I relied on a little help from my friends. I posted the question on my facebook page and everyone jumped in with helpful and not so helpful titles. My only criteria was that it had to have Cowboy and Heart. Claiming a Cowboy’s Heart jumped out at me…

How do you come up with names? Do you like when the names fit what you think the characters look like?

Claiming a Cowboy’s Heart

Melissa Keir

Even broken souls deserve a second chance at love…

Elementary Teacher, Michelle Alt’s faced untold trials in her life, yet she continues to do what’s right to make things better for the next generation.

Cowboy Veterinarian, Preston Hall has lost everything in order to follow his dreams and return to his grandfather’s small town practice.

These two broken souls recognize each other’s pain and come together to heal, but fear and misunderstandings send their blossoming relationship into a tailspin. Will they be able to put aside their pain to find the love of a lifetime?

With her floral shoulder bag hanging from her arm, Michelle Alt approached the dead raccoon. The smell overwhelmed her. Pinching her nose, she took deep breaths through her mouth. The full moon illuminated the intersection across from her school. People should learn to drive slower on this street. This time a raccoon, someday a child.

She squatted and dumped the contents of her purse on the asphalt. Removing the cheap dollar-store clothespin from her purse, she dealt with the smell and closed off her nose. The spring had just enough strength to press her nostrils together without hurting. With her hands free, she selected a yellow pair of sunglasses from inside her bag and slipped them on the raccoon’s face. A smile flitted across her lips.

“That’s a start.” Looking at the pile of junk sitting at her side, she removed a couple of more items, setting a red plastic cup with a paper umbrella next to the raccoon’s hand. Last, she inserted a small bottle of sunscreen between his arm and body then cleaned up the remaining materials, stuffing them into her bag.

It’s perfect. He looks like he’s resting in the sun. Another day at the beach for Mr. Raccoon. She glanced at her watch. Crap, I need to run. I hate asking Mom to watch my daughter for these little acts of willful disobedience. Thank goodness, she’s more than happy to watch Connie, even for, in her words, ‘a waste of time’. But I’m so thankful to have her helping me. I’d never be able to do it all alone. Standing, she slipped her bag over her shoulder, glanced down the street—no one in sight—and dashed off toward home.

A deep sigh escaped her lips. The porch light glimmered in the distance. Almost home and no one the wiser. I can’t wait to see what people think of this roadkill art. All caught up in her fantasy, she bumped into a brick wall. “Umph.” Michelle raised her gaze and locked on the fullest lips she’d ever seen. Are they as soft as they look?

“I’m sorry,” the wall spoke. “I didn’t see you.”

About Melissa

Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Her love of books was instilled by her mother and grandparents who were avid readers. In middle school and high school, Melissa used to write sappy love poems and shared them with her friends and still has those poems today! In college her writing changed to sarcastic musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won awards for her writing. You can find many of these musings along with her latest releases on her website and blog.

As a writer, Melissa likes to keep current on topics of interest in the world of writing. She’s a member of the Romance Writers of America, Mid-Michigan RWA Chapter, and EPIC. She is always interested in improving her writing through classes and seminars.

Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a movie reviewer, an owner of a publishing company as well as an author. Echo Mine & Georgia Lyn Hunter

Author: Georgia Lyn Hunter

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Series: Fallen Guardians

Title: Echo, Mine (A novella 1.5)

ABOUT Georgia Lyn Hunter:

GHL picI’ve been creating stories from the moment I could string two words together. No matter the tale, it always has romance woven through them. Yes, I’m a hopeless romantic.

When I’m not writing or plotting new books, I like to read, travel, paint, or troll flea markets where I usually buy things I might never actually use because they’re so pretty—who can resist those displays.

I come from the beautiful country of South Africa, and currently live in the Middle East.

After working in a few jobs (all art related), a chosen career as a fashion designer, then an art teacher, I finally found my passion nearly five years ago: writing. There really is no other job I’d rather do.

Now for some questions:

1: What do you do when your muse decides to play hide?

Read or start work on something different—why I always beat Dammit (that’s my muse’s name) by working on two projects.

2: How long did it take you do write first draft of Echo, Mine and then completion of said manuscript?

I wrote the rough draft in one night (four hours-LOL—I amazed myself with that one J) and completion of manuscript was two weeks. I really enjoyed going back to my couple from Absolute Surrender.

3: Do you trash a story after its written, or set it aside for a look later when it didn’t work the way you want?

Oh, I never thrash anything. I set it aside, then come back after a few weeks and brutally cut of what had me stopping in the first place. (I still keep a saved copy of the original.)

4: As a writer, do you often spend as much time researching a book as writing it. Do you explore Google and YouTube sites or visit specific locations?

All the time. I must get a feel for the place and facts, before I write any story.

5: And what are you currently working on?

Right now, I’m writing the draft of my 3rd book from my Fallen Guardian series.

Tell us a little about your newest release.

BLURB: Echo, Mine (A novella)

After a horrifying incident that left her in a coma for several long months, Echo now has to get used to a different life. As a descendant of a powerful angel, her days waver between training as the new Healer and convincing her mate she’s strong enough to match him in life and in bed.

A surprise date night gives her the perfect opportunity to do both. But plans have a way of coming unraveled. One disaster leads to another, and Echo accepts that nothing in their lives will ever be normal.

But the biggest revelation of the night comes after she kills a dangerous, soul-sucking demon. Sparks fly between her and her mate, proving that normal is most definitely overrated.

She rested her arms on the white, damask-covered table. “I’m so glad you could take a night off.”

Aethan leaned back in his chair, his brow creasing. “We’ve always had that option, we just didn’t utilize it.” His gaze held hers. Warm. Soft. “There was no need to before.”

Understanding struck. “Until me.”

“Until you.”

She smiled. “Then I’m glad you’ve taken it. I like this. You, me, here.”

He covered her hand on the table. “We both needed this. At the castle, you’re always busy, training with Hedori, lessons with that idiot Lore—”

“Lore’s not so bad, Aethan. Just don’t react to his taunting. You know those angels will take their enjoyment anyway they can. As for the training, it’s important to me, but you could always change your mind and teach me yourself, you know.”

“I don’t think I’d be a good trainer for you. Besides…” His gaze skimmed over her face, a sensual glint in his eyes. “Every time I have you under me, on the floor, I get distracted.”

She swallowed. While that may have been true once, Aethan no longer made love to her on the spur of the moment, except in bed. She appreciated his care and consideration, but dammit, she was tired of the gentleness. She wanted the man who had a voracious, no-holds-barred appetite when it came to sex—she wanted the downpour—the thunderstorm. She wanted all that back.

Her gaze lingered on the untouched strawberries…she wasn’t hungry, but she’d use whatever weapons she had. Before tonight was over, Aethan would have no idea what hit him. That iron will of his would be nothing but a puddle of raw desire.

“Fine,” she said, taking a sip of her drink before he cottoned onto her plan and armed up. “I guess Hedori will have to do. But I’m giving you fair warning, Aethan. I’m going to ask one of the others to spar with me, too. I need to learn to fight with different opponents. Týr is vicious. I like his style.” Setting her glass down, she hid a smile as Aethan narrowed his eyes. “And Blaéz, he’s real brutal, fights like a street fighter—truly amazing. As for Dagan…” She frowned then shrugged. “I haven’t really seen him fight. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.”

“They won’t fight you.”

“Why not? Ugh, Aethan, you didn’t?” She gave him a disgusted look. “Did you warn them off?”

A faint smile touched his mouth. “No. I haven’t. But they won’t.”

Dammit, they were all alike.

Here’s an excerpt from my WIP – Captive Hearts – Book 2 Hearts series:

Instead of scowling at her, like he usually did when she lost a sparing match with him, something flashed in his eyes. Impression? Desire? No, couldn’t be that. His breath of vanilla and mint washed over her, and she couldn’t stop staring at his mouth. Had it always been full with a dimple on the side of his cheek when he smiled?

“Guess I took you by surprise that time.” She forced her eyes from his mouth to stare into his gold flecked brown eyes. “Maybe you need to up your game?”

Without a comeback, he lowered his head and brushed his mouth across hers. Tingles spread through her. Before she could react, he pulled away and stood.

“Now who’s off?” Tommy smirked and his dimple deepened.

Obviously she was. Tommy didn’t like her, not in a romantic way, he couldn’t. They’d spent years together ever since the Uncles faked their death and became their guardians. After their foster parents were killed, the Uncles were the only ones they and their dad trusted. She thought she knew men; she’d been so sure Paul was the good guy he pretended to be. And it had all been a lie.

Tommy placed his hands on her shoulders until she looked up at him.

“Don’t bring him into your thoughts.” His brown eyes softened. “He’s not worth it. You are so much better than that scum.”

Her favorite childhood memories revolved around creating vibrant characters for her friends, and then acting out their adventures. Inside her fantasy worlds of darkened forests, dragon-filled glades, and iced islands, nothing was banned. From the ethereal Elvin to the most maligned Vampires, all were welcome in her fictional realities, a stark contrast to her home, where the magical and mythical was forbidden.

Divorced and disillusioned of love and believing all the love songs and books exaggerated, she put aside her creativity for life. Many years past before characters, from the familiar to the freshly conceived, came to her again, but this time teasing at a new passion, the written word.

Gradually, her real life hero brought love and magic back into existence. During the time when her characters were getting reacquainted, the love of her life was showing her that true love never gives up and rekindles no matter how many times others attempt to extinguish it. Today, she is happily married with three children.

Andrea believes in the power of change and delighting in each moment. But most fervently, she believes in the magic of love and imagination again.
