Esmeralda hovered lower and caught a whiff of cinnamon and baking bread and sighed. Food was one of the things she envied about humans. So many choices and such wonderful aromas. A few times, she’d tried to deviate from her diet of honey and flower nectars but regretted it, retching for days afterward. Lowering down, she paused outside a bakery with its doors open, and the smells wafting from inside made her place a hand over her stomach.
She closed her eyes briefly, indulging in the mouthwatering scents. Transforming into human-size, she wondered if just a nibble or a lick of icing would make her bemoan it later. She kept her invisibility shield up, debating, when a solid weight suddenly smacked into her back, and she crumbled to the ground. Her shield shattered.
“Oooaf. Sorry about that,” a man in a baker’s apron said. “I didn’t see you there.” A tray full of cinnamon rolls and muffins had spilled out onto the street. “Are you okay?” The man rose and offered her a hand.
“Y-you can see me?” she asked, her voice squeaking.
“Well, now I can.” Icing clung to his apron and other stains were smeared across the front. Most of the stains appeared newly made. She’d made a mess of his food.
“Sorry. I can fix this.” Where was her wand? She glanced around. It had pierced a muffin.
“A little early for a costume party.” He bent down and returned the salvageable muffins— the ones that hadn’t landed face down on the sidewalk— to the tray.

Her favorite childhood memories revolved around creating vibrant characters for her friends, and then acting out their adventures. Inside her fantasy worlds of darkened forests, dragon-filled glades, and iced islands, nothing was banned. From the ethereal Elvin to the most maligned Vampires, all were welcome in her fictional realities, a stark contrast to her home, where the magical and mythical was forbidden.
