Hi and thanks for having me on your blog today.
One of my favourite sources of inspiration for my writing is researching mythology. When I first started my blog, I had a semi-regular weekly post called Mythology Monday. In these posts I would research random mythological creatures and characters from a variety of cultures and societies. Whenever possible, I would try to select a subject that I either knew very little about, or was familiar with but wanted to learn more about. This was a helpful way for me to develop my research skills, as well as learn about reliable information sites and gain ideas for future stories.
Most western cultures are familiar with Greek, Norse and Celtic mythology. But one of the things I tried to do was explore cultures that I was less familiar with. Along with werewolves, mermaids are one of my favourite mythological creatures. Through research I was able to learn that in Japanese mythology there are similar creatures known as ningyo. These mermaid cousins have the traditional mermaid form of a human upper body and a fish lower body, but have further lore, which says that their tears are actually pearls. What a wonderful twist on what I consider a classic mythological creature. And something that could bring an element of uniqueness to a mermaid story I might want to write in the future.
One of my other favourite finds while doing research was Krampus. Krampus is a mythological God of winter in many European cultures. But in several cultures he has become the antithesis of Santa Claus. Punishing children during Christmas, Krampus has even been known to put children into his sack and take them and leave them out in the woods. What a nasty guy, but at the same time, what a great idea for a story villain. If I wasn’t spending a lot of time writing, I think I would spend my time just researching mythology for diamonds like the ningyo and Krampus.
